No, not to us, but...to our Gremlins.
Last week I attended a powerful workshop hosted by the Women’s Health Leadership TRUST, where we did something I’ve never done in a professional setting: we named our inner critic.
Mine? She’s been with me since high school algebra, popping up with doubts any time I’m in a room where strategy or finance are on the table. Her voice says things like “Remember how bad you were at this?” And until now, I’ve listened to her more than I care to admit.
But during this workshop, we were challenged not only to name our Gremlins but to understand their origin, and then promote them. That’s right: promote them to a more useful role.
Emma is now my Chief Confidence Officer, she resides in the Wellbeing & Development Department.
She still shows up when I’m reading spreadsheets or faced with a finance issue, but now her role is to remind me that I should ask questions, that I do belong at the table, and call up times where I was previously successful.
I’m grateful to the incredible coach, Heather Tibbles-Vassilev, who led us through this journey - thank you for creating space to unpack the stories we tell ourselves and rewrite them with purpose.

I wasn’t sure what “Your Gremlin” was all about when I signed up for this month’s Women's Health Leadership TRUST’s Health Leadership TRUST event. But I’m so glad I showed up. What I found was a room full of thoughtful, wise women in healthcare and a session packed with insights.
A few takeaways:
▪️ Your inner critic doesn’t disappear, but you can learn to recognize when it’s not telling the truth.
▪️ A powerful way to push back on that voice? Ask yourself: Is that actually true?
▪️ One small shift in language or reflection can reframe your entire day.
