What Your Tennis Ball Says About Your Values

Reflections  from Jakki, Canine Co-Coach

Humans spend a lot of time talking about values.
Dogs are simpler.
We don’t talk about our values. We chase them.
For me, it’s family, treats, and long walks.
You know how I know? Because that’s where I spend my time, attention, and energy.
There’s a lesson in that.
“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
If someone wants to know what I value, they don’t need to ask me. They only need to watch me.
The same is true for humans.

Your Calendar Reveals Your Values

Many people have two sets of values:
The ones they talk about and the ones they live.
Values aren’t revealed by intentions. They’re revealed by investments.
Your calendar, attention, energy, and priorities tell the story of what matters most.

Why Values Matter at Work

One thing Heather often discusses with leaders is Hogan’s focus on motives, values, and preferences.
Simply put, people are energized by different things.
Some value achievement. Others value service. Some value innovation. Others value stability, expertise, or relationships.
None of these are wrong.
They simply influence where we invest our treasure and how we make decisions at work and at home.

The Real Reason We Have Conflict

Most conflict isn’t actually about the issue on the table.
It’s about competing values.
One person is protecting speed.
Another is protecting quality.
One values autonomy.
Another values collaboration.
When we argue positions, we get stuck.
When we understand values, we find possibilities.

True Empathy Changes Everything

True empathy is not agreement.
It’s the willingness to understand what matters to someone else.
Ask:
• What are they trying to protect?
• What value is driving their perspective?
• Why is this important to them?
When we become curious instead of defensive, we move beyond “my way” versus “your way.”
That’s where a third option emerges.
A solution that honors speed and quality.
Innovation and stability.
Results and relationships.

A Final Thought from the Dog Bed

Your treasure leaves clues.
Your time leaves clues.
Your attention leaves clues.
Your reactions during conflict leave clues.
So here’s my question:
If someone followed you around for a week, what would they conclude you truly value?
As for me, the answer is still family, treats, and tennis balls.
Although the order may vary depending on whether snacks are involved.
