Joy in the Flip: A Pup’s Guide to Turning Transitions into New Beginnings
By Jakki, Chief Joy Officer + Professional Sniffer of All Things Possible
Hi friends, it’s me — Jakki.
Your four‑legged co‑coach, joy ambassador, and certified expert in rolling upside‑down on the couch for maximum life satisfaction.
Today I want to talk about something both humans (and dogs) find complicated: Transitions.
Layoffs. Uncertainty. Big changes. The moments when your world tilts and you’re not sure which way is up.
I’ve lived through a few transitions myself — rescue life will do that to you. And I’ve watched my human go through them too. Almost four years ago, she lost a job she loved after 15 years. She was sad. Confused. A little wobbly. (I sat on her feet a lot during that time. It helps.)
But here’s the thing about transitions:
They’re not just endings.
They’re invitations.
And joy — tiny, wiggly, everyday joy — is what helps you walk through the doorway.
Joy Isn’t a Distraction. It’s a Compass.
When my human was building her coaching practice, things felt foggy at times, like a roller coaster. She didn’t know what was coming next. She didn’t know if she was doing it “right.” (Humans worry about that a lot.)
One afternoon, she looked over at me. I was upside down on the couch, paws in the air, living my best life. Not because everything was perfect. Not because I had all the answers. But because joy is always available if you’re willing to notice it.
Joy doesn’t erase the hard stuff.
Joy reminds you that the hard stuff isn’t the whole story.
Curiosity: Joy’s Favorite Sidekick
If joy is the spark, curiosity is the leash that pulls you forward.
On our walks, I sniff everything.
Every leaf pile. Every corner. Every mysterious scent that might be a squirrel or might be a sandwich. You never know until you check.
Curiosity is my way of saying:
“What if something wonderful is hiding right here?”
And joy always answers:
“Let’s go find out.”
Together, joy + curiosity turn fear into possibility.
They turn uncertainty into adventure.
They turn “I don’t know what’s next” into “I wonder what’s next.”
The Flip: From Ending to Beginning
Mel Robbins says, “You are one decision away from a completely different life.”
I say, “You are one sniff away from a completely different path.”
Same idea.
Choosing joy — even a tiny bit — is a decision.
Choosing curiosity — even one question — is a decision.
And those decisions flip you from stuck to moving, from scared to open, from ending to beginning.
Joy in Transition Looks Like:
✨ Wagging your tail for what remains
✨ Sitting close to the people who care
✨ Letting yourself laugh, even when things feel heavy
✨ Sniffing out new possibilities, one small step at a time
Joy isn’t denial.
Joy is resilience wrapped in softness.
Joy is the bridge that carries you from where you were to where you’re going.
Your Turn, Human
If you’re in a transition — big or small — here are a few invitations from me:
🕯️ Where could curiosity help you see possibility instead of limitation?
🐾 What tiny joy snack could you add to your day to shift your energy?
🌱 How might joy + curiosity help you walk through your next doorway with a little more courage?
I’ll be here cheering you on — tail wagging, nose twitching, ready for whatever adventure comes next.
Love + joyful sniffs,
Jakki
