Jakki’s Corner: A Canine Coach’s Guide to Mindset Mobility
By Jakki, Chief Sniffing Officer & Four‑Pawed Leadership Mentor
Hello, humans. Jakki here—your resident canine coach, professional observer of emotional energy, and expert in sniffing out what’s really going on beneath the surface.
August is one of my favorite months. The grass is still warm, the squirrels are still bold, and yet… I can feel the shift. The air changes. The humans start walking a little faster, thinking a little further ahead, and carrying that “fall planning brain” energy that makes me tilt my head and wonder:
Are you moving with your mind, or is your mind dragging you?
That’s why I’m thrilled Heather is focusing this month’s newsletter on mindset mobility. As a dog, mobility is kind of my thing. I shift constantly—between curiosity, caution, excitement, rest, play, and focus. I don’t cling to one mode. I move. I adapt. I respond to what’s in front of me.
Humans, however… You tend to stay stuck in one mental posture long after it’s useful.
And that’s where SHIFT™ comes in.
A Dog’s-Eye View of SHIFT™
Let me break it down in canine terms:
Human Lens
This is the “pack dynamics” lens. Who’s stressed? Who’s energized? Who needs reassurance? Humans call this “emotional intelligence.” Dogs call it “Tuesday.”
Business Lens
This is the “territory and resources” lens. Where are we going? What’s the plan? How do we get there without wasting energy?
Technical Lens
This is the “precision and pattern” lens. What’s the actual problem? What are the constraints? What needs to be solved, built, or fixed?
Most technical leaders stay in the Technical Lens because it feels safe—like lying on your favorite blanket. But leadership today requires shifting between all three, sometimes in the same conversation.
Mobility is the magic.
The SHIFT™ Mobility Model
Now, let me wag my tail and introduce the SHIFT™ steps themselves. They’re simple, memorable, and surprisingly canine‑approved:
S — Sense the Alarm Notice the moment your energy spikes, your shoulders tense, or your brain starts barking. Awareness is the first move.
H — Honor the Human Before solving anything, remember there’s a human (or a whole pack) involved. Emotions matter. Context matters. Nervous systems matter.
I — Inquire with Curiosity Tilt your head—literally or metaphorically. Ask questions that open space instead of closing it. Curiosity is how you find the real scent trail.
F — Find Your Footing Ground yourself. Slow your breathing. Reconnect to your values, your role, and your intention. A steady stance makes every next move wiser.
T — Track a Forward Action Choose one small, meaningful step. Not ten. Just one. Forward motion builds confidence and keeps the pack moving together.
That’s mindset mobility in action: noticing, honoring, exploring, grounding, and moving.
Why Mindset Mobility Matters
In July’s LinkedIn newsletter, Heather talked about the Five Unmet Needs of Mid‑Career Technical Leaders in 2026. I listened closely (I always do—my ears are excellent), and here’s what I noticed:
Technical leaders aren’t struggling because they lack skill. They’re struggling because the world around them is changing faster than their mental stance.
It’s like watching a human try to chase a squirrel while standing still. Great intentions. Wrong posture.
Today’s challenges require leaders to move between different ways of thinking—just like I move between sniffing, sprinting, resting, and observing depending on what the moment calls for.
That’s what the SHIFT™ Mindset Mobility Framework teaches: How to move fluidly between the Human, Business, and Technical lenses so you can see the whole landscape—not just the part right in front of your nose.
How SHIFT™ Connects to the Five Unmet Needs
Heather will walk you through the full teaching model in the LinkedIn newsletter, but here’s my canine‑coach summary:
• Leading without losing technical credibility → SHIFT helps you expand your identity without abandoning your strengths.
• Influencing in ambiguous environments → SHIFT helps you read the room, not just the data.
• Leading through AI acceleration → SHIFT helps you see the human impact of technical change.
• Leading sustainably without burning out → SHIFT helps you shift your energy before it collapses.
• Leadership that feels like a system, not a personality → SHIFT helps you build repeatable patterns, not heroic effort.
In other words: SHIFT helps you lead like a whole human, not just a technical brain.
A Practical Mindset Mobility Tip (Inspired by My Daily Walks)
Next time you’re facing a tough problem, try this:
Pause. Shift your stance. Ask yourself: “Which lens am I in right now?”
If you’re stuck in the Technical Lens, try sniffing around the Human Lens. If you’re lost in the Human Lens, trot over to the Business Lens. If you’re tangled in the Business Lens, return to the Technical Lens for clarity.
Mobility is the magic.
Final Tail Wag
Mindset mobility isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being adaptive. It’s about noticing when your mind is stuck—and choosing to move.
Dogs do this naturally. Humans can learn it. And SHIFT™ is one of the best tools I’ve seen for helping leaders move with more clarity, confidence, and emotional range.
I’ll be cheering you on from my favorite sunny spot. And if you need a coach who never judges, always listens, and gives excellent side‑eye when you’re stuck in the wrong lens… You know where to find me.
Until next month,
Jakki 🐾 Your Canine Coach in Mindset Mobility
