🐾 A Note From Jakki, on Pausing, Sniffing the Breeze & Knowing “You don’t have to become someone else to lead.”
Hi friends, It’s Jakki — your resident canine co‑coach, professional observer, and expert in sniffing out what’s really going on beneath the surface.
While Heather has been busy analyzing data, building frameworks, and helping technical leaders navigate the messy middle of their careers, I’ve been doing my own kind of research: watching humans.
And let me tell you… you’re fascinating.
You pace when you’re thinking. You sigh when you’re overwhelmed. You perk up when something finally makes sense. And you relax — visibly — when someone tells you, “You don’t have to become someone else to lead.”
I see it all.
So today, I want to share what I notice. Let’s dig in. 🐾
1. You want to lead without losing your technical credibility.
I see you clutching your technical work like I clutch my favorite squeaky toy. You don’t want to let go — not because you’re stubborn, but because it’s part of your identity.
From my spot on my coaching couch, I can tell when you’re worried about becoming “too soft” or “not technical enough.” Your foot taps faster. Your shoulders tense.
But here’s the truth I’ve learned from watching coaching calls:
Leadership doesn’t replace your expertise. It extends it.
You’re not losing your edge — you’re widening your impact.
2. You want influence… without the politics.
Humans hate unclear rules. Trust me — dogs do too.
When decision rights are fuzzy, priorities shift, or agendas hide behind closed doors, I watch you get frustrated. You crave clarity the way I crave treats.
But influence isn’t about playing games. It’s about communicating clearly, building trust, and knowing how to navigate ambiguity without losing your values.
You don’t need to be political and you don’t need to become someone else.
You need tools that make influence feel ethical and engineerable.
3. You want to lead through AI acceleration without drowning.
I’ve watched you try to keep up with constant change — new tools, new workflows, new expectations.
Your brain gets tired. Your calendar gets full. Your walk breaks get shorter (which I do not approve of).
AI isn’t slowing down, and neither are the demands placed on you. But change leadership doesn’t have to feel mystical or emotional. It can feel structured — like a system redesign.
You just need models that match the way your mind already works.
4. You want to lead sustainably — without burning out.
I know when you’re exhausted. You sit differently. You stare at your screen like it personally offended you.
Technical leaders carry legacy responsibilities, new expectations, emotional labor, and constant context switching. That’s a lot for any human — even one with opposable thumbs.
You don’t need more mindset shifts. You need energy systems. You need boundaries. You need support.
And maybe… more walk breaks with me.
5. You want leadership to feel like a system — not a personality.
This is the one I see most clearly.
You don’t want vague advice like “be more confident” or “be more strategic.” You want leadership to be:
• structured
• predictable
• learnable
• model‑driven
You want to engineer leadership the way you engineer systems.
And you can.
Because leadership shouldn’t feel like losing your identity. It should feel like expanding it.
And if you ever forget that, just look at me: I’m still myself… just learning new tricks.🐾
